Marla & Eric | Dumbarton Oaks engagement

Marla and Eric are my very favorite kind of people to photograph.  They were down for anything, as I will prove shortly.  We take a few "happy couple" shots (how I refer to the smile-at-the-camera-and-look-pretty photos I take mostly for my clients' mothers) and then we were off!  They chose to do their engagement photos at Dumbarton Oaks which, despite being the site of engagement and family sessions every single day, is an incredibly awesome place to both visit and photograph.  Every  time I visit, there is something new to see. dumbarton oaks engagement photography Eric had actually just sneezed in this frame, but I love it. weird engagement photography with bamboo engagement photography at dumbarton oaks Dumbarton Oaks engagement session funky hip engagement photos This sparkly installation thing is totally new and completely cool. engagement photography with sparkly sky thing washington dc engagement photography engagement photographs at dumbarton oaks dumbarton oaks engagement photographer engagement photography in washington dc And, yes, I should probably be too embarrassed to post this (especially after the "30 most awkward engagement photos" or whatever that post is called has been making the rounds) but I think this is hilarious.  These trees confound me, really.  They are so cool, so weird, so creepy.  And I have been at Dumbarton Oaks with a couple way too many times not to have done something awesome here.  So we did some stuff.  And then I figured - heck - if you're going to go with silly, go with silly.  And voila! hilarious engagement photos So much congratulations Marla and Eric!  I'll see you guys soon for that wedding!

Joanna & Michael | Brooklyn engagement

Heck yeah, it's getting all New York up in here.  Joanna and Michael were my day #2 engagement session in New York awesomeness (day one, of course, was Anastasia & Nick).  These two rocked out Prospect Park in Brooklyn and the beautiful Promenade where I got  to dork out with Manhattan views.  I'm sure all the New York photographers think it's lame or played-out to shoot there - I don't care!  I was lovin' the sweet views. brooklyn engagement photographer amber wilkie engagement session in prospect park prospect park, brooklyn, engagement photography brooklyn engagement photographer engagement photography in brooklyn's prospect park Michael's a small-town guy.  So when there was a dude with a bike hanging out right about where Joanna and Michael are now, he just went over and asked him to move.  Then later (for the photo at the top), I needed my light to be way higher, so we just asked this little old lady to hold the flash.  She dug it.  It was awesome.  Random New Yorker being my 30-second photo assistant. engagement photos at brooklyn promenade brooklyn promenade engagement session engagement photography in brooklyn engagement photos in a taxicab That was all for NYC.... for now.  So much congratulations to Joanna and Michael!  I'll see y'all soon!

Anastasia & Nick | New York City engagement

I'm constantly telling my couples to choose somewhere meaningful for their engagement session.  Plenty of people take this to mean their neighborhood, which is awesome and I love shooting in and around my peoples' homes.  But Anastasia and Nick took this a big leap further.  A couple days before their engagement session (in New York City!), they changed their minds from somewhere scenic to their very own kitchen. manhattan engagement session This was a really really cool engagement session for me, and not just because they fed me porterhouse steak.  As I strive to move my business more and more toward candidness, documentation, photojournalism, I'm thrilled to work with people who want their real lives on film.  So, without further musings, Anastasia & Nick cook dinner: engagement session in a kitchen photojournalist amber wilkie kitchen engagement photography new york city engagement photographer making ravioli at an engagement session cooking engagement session in new york city ravioli mess at an engagement session salting a steak getting ready to go outside engagement photography in new york city engagement session on new york rooftop adorable couple on new york city rooftop beautiful girl on new york rooftop engagement session in the kitchen playing around during new york city engagement session cooking engagement photography salad greens martha stewart table photo finished product from cooking engagement session super-cute engagement session in new york city engagement photography in manhattan As you can imagine, I'm even more excited now for their wedding in July (here in DC).  Thanks so much for inviting me into your home, guys!  It was so so cool.
