NHFA Noche de Gala – D.C. Event Photographer

A couple weeks ago, I photographed the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts' Noche de Gala.  The NHFS promotes Latinos in the media, telecommunications and entertainment industries.  Their annual Noche de Gala recognizes students who received scholarships that year and the individuals presented with the organization's awards. Also, Jimmy Smits was there. Here are a few more from the evening. On the left, attorney Felix Sanchez and actress Merel Julia.  Cristina seemed really cool.  I didn't get a chance to talk to her or anything, but there is a weird kind of communication between photographer and subject - you look at each other, acknowledge that a photograph was taken, maybe she is checking to make sure you got what you needed... it's kind of neat. Tuesday on the Web

On the Web

Each Tuesday, I post a roundup of the best stuff I saw on the internet that week.  Enjoy! Why Cash is Almost Always Better Than Gift Cards via Lifehacker If you are ever in a position to give me or receive from me a present, you should know that I *despise* gift cards.  Show me how a gift card is *ever* better than cash.  You can't.  Maybe it's a social faux pas to hand over some dough, but it's the same exact thing as a gift card, but with less effort required and more flexibility for the recipient.  Die gift cards die! DIY portable wedding photobooth I love when somebody else does all the work for something I needed to figure out anyway. How to Use Duct Tape via WikiHow Now I don't remember what we needed it for, but I recently asked my husband "hey baby, where is the duct tape?"  To which he responded that we didn't have any!  We have got to be the only house in America that doesn't have duct tape.  (Also, when I was younger and not even that much younger, I used to call it "duck tape" and always wondered where it got its weird name.) Roasted Vegetable Minestrone via Pioneer Woman I probably shouldn't be posting a link to this lady's blog because I am totally ripping off her blogging style but can one really be said to "steal" a "blogging style"? Anyway, this is a beautiful and delicious-looking minestrone soup recipe. No, you really shouldn't need a recipe for minestrone soup, but she photographs every step beautifully and takes you on a little taste/cooking journey. Really, check out the Pioneer Lady. She knows what she's talking about. And because I always try to include an image on any post here, below are two photographs from Jim Moran's Women's Issues Conference.  I only stayed to hear Maureen Bunyan of ABC7/WJLA-TV, but I thought it was such a cool idea and great networking opportunity... if I had come quite a bit earlier.  Sometimes you're laying in bed with your husband chatting, and it's not worth it to get up and make it to your event. Clarendon Day – Burrito Eating Contest

The main event that got me up and out of the house to the Clarendon Day festival on Saturday (see below for full post) was the burrito-eating contest.  "View an eating contest" is one of my goals for 2010 and I'm happy to say that I checked that one off! This contest started off relatively sane, but by the time 10 minutes were up, the leaders had downed more than two Chipotle-size burritos and one of them had transferred those burritos from his stomach into a trash can.  Good times.  These images are in order taken.
