President’s Park, Bass Pro Shops & a stranger

My travels this week took me down to Norfolk, VA.  I go there a couple of times a year to photograph some of the ships in the area.  On the way back, I tried to stop at a place called President's Park - an amazing little attraction with massive presidents' heads.  I was dismayed to learn that the park apparently had to shut down for financial reasons.  It would be a very short fence to hop and go in, though... perhaps on a subsequent (warmer) trip, I will do a little trespassing.  In the meantime, I snagged some photos from beyond the fence. president's park - williamsburg, va president's park - williamsburg, va president's park - williamsburg, va president's park - williamsburg, va I also stopped in the Bass Pro Shops on my drive up.  That place never fails to amuse and amaze me.  They have a waterfall inside that flows into a giant aquarium. fish in an aquarium in black and white fish swimming among a bunch of other fishes Finally, the Lighting Essentials' Project 52 assignment for last week was to photograph a stranger.  I do this all the time for my street photography, but it's a totally different thing to walk up to someone and actually convince them to pose for you.  They normally ask "what's it for?" and my heart jumps into my throat and I basically scurry away as quickly as possible.  Not the best conditions for taking a great picture.  So here's my lackluster entry for Week #2.  I plan to do considerably better for the other assignments.  Here's Jonathan at Umi Japanese Fine Dining in Fredericksburg, VA. jonathan, sushi maker

MCP Week 2/52 – Self-portraits

I've talked about the windows in my apartment before, and I probably will again.  They are fantastic.  After this maybe 5 minute self-portrait session on my bed, I'm very much thinking about doing some boudoir right here in my home.  Is anyone interested in boudoir photography?  First serious person will be my guinea pig in this space and won't have to pay.  Everyone else will have to make it rain. I think I'd be really, really good at boudoir.  I'm not scared around nekkid people and I've always been fascinated by sexuality.  I secretly think it might be my destiny.  Anyway, I shot these for MCP Actions' 52 Week project.    The theme was "illustrate a song" and I have had Tom Petty's "Free Falling" in my head all week.  I ended up making a diptych, which you don't see here because I used the full images alone. self-portrait on my bed me in my amazing soft window light What makes this light so lovely is that part of my building juts out a few apartments down, which blocks the sun after 3pm or so this time of year, taking away any direct light and deep shadows that would ensue.  This lets the very soft, even light from the sky to fill in through these enormous windows.  Pretty, right?  No not me, the way I'm lit! looking out my window self-portrait on my bed - thinking jumping on the bed

From the streets to the train: DC Metro photography

I had twenty minutes or so to kill before it was time for me to meet up with some friends in Dupont (congratulations to Sara on the promotion!).  Of everywhere in the city - Gallery Place, Georgetown, monuments, Smithsonian - there is one place that always has a photo waiting to happen.  That place is the DC Metro.  I can always tell when I'm in a creative rut by going to the metro.  If I can't find anything I want to take a picture of, it is decidedly rut time.  Fortunately, that same place can also pull me out of said rut.  It is so easy to be intrigued and inspired by the scenes underground.  A few from yesterday: lady sleeping on the dc metro guy checking his ipod on the dc metro underneath dude's chin on the metro train guy looking really spaced out on the metro lady reading a paper waiting for her train lady looking bored on the train three people looking different ways on the dc metro
