Stuff I Love: the library

The public library.  It is so awesome it's almost unbelievable.  I won't spend much time selling you on the reasons to visit a library.  If you're anything like me, you're already well versed.  If you're not anything like me, you're probably not reading my blog!  I'll just tell you my all-time favorite library feature: holds. If you are a card-carrying member of the Arlington system, you can put something like 75 books on hold at once.  Then they magically come from libraries throughout the system right to the library most convenient to you.  I like to put bestselling books, DVDs, popular nonfiction, etc. on my list - books that aren't available now.  And then when they come available, it is like a present.  You never know when they're coming, but they are!  Here's George at Central - the biggest library in the Arlington system. handsome guy at the library The library is the best.  It really is. If you happen to have seen my pricing materials, you'll know that I did my engagement photos at our library (at the time).  The lovely Puck set up all manner of lights and things and snapped away.  The also lovely people at Aurora Hills opened up a half-hour early just so we could clown around on the shelves without other patrons being around.  It was a grand time.  These is Puck's photo: me and george at aurora hills library You know what else I loved?  Those glasses.  Too bad I stepped on them and destroyed them beyond repair. On the plus side, I'm about 15 pounds lighter than I was there.  Happy Monday, y'all.

Fall colors are so overrated

Yes things are turning from yellow/purple/pink/white to green-green-green, but I love the last stragglers that scream purple for just a couple extra weeks before giving up the ghost. I grew up in California and we don't get blossoming trees.  Period.  Trees are always green and sometimes drop a few brown leaves, but mostly stay chipper all year.  I had heard all about "fall colors" growing up, but no one ever raves about the Spring blooms.  Why?  Sorry but in my book, these trump.  A bit of the last of it until next year...

My poor sexless tomato plants

Gardening is really magical for the uninitiated.  You start with these little brown specks and some dirt and just a few weeks later, you've created all this life from seemingly nothing.  I was really impressed when my tomato plants started shooting for the sky (well, okay, the window) but now it's quite clear I started them far too early and now they're blooming before it's time for them to go in the ground.  You're supposed to wait until the soil temperature stays above 60 degrees or something like that. tomato plant blossom We'll probably plant them this week, if it ever quits raining.  When I started this little garden, I knew I wasn't going to do anything silly like "hardening off" these plants.  If anything wants to live in my garden, it needs to be tough.  No babying my lovelies - it's sink or swim in this hard-knock world of... vegetables.
