Seattle hotel self-portraits

I spend a lot of time in hotel rooms, traveling about, and some time ago I started taking self-portraits - often because I was bored, but also because hotel rooms frequently have great light.  They're also an extremely clean and streamlined environment - great for portraiture.  I've posted several times before with new additions to the project.  You can see the whole set here.  I guess I got bored with doing them with clothes on, so a little semi-nude action for the blog! wedding and portrait photographer Amber Wilkie black and white self-portrait in hotel room half-naked girl in seattle hotel room

Seattle | Days 3-5

I'm still super-digging Seattle.  I've seen a bit more of the city and even the slightly further-out areas seem interesting and cool.  I've eaten a ton more delicious food and plan to spend my last day here wandering around the city.  But wanted to hop on here and share a few more images from my travels thus far. First up - a handful of scenes from the Underground Tour.  Of all the tourist options available, I was glad my colleagues chose this one.  I'm not much for riding a giant "duck" around. sign from underground tour, seattle underground tour stuff diptych The St. James Cathedral on Capitol Hill was pretty cool and had these massive yellow and red streamers flowing from the central skylight.  We later learned that these represent fire - in your soul or something.  I'm not big on Catholic lore either. virgin mary in the st. james cathedral ribbon flames at the st. james cathedral, seattle Right next to the cathedral is the Frye Art Museum, which had one of the most interesting art displays I've seen. coworker in the frye art museum, seattle And, of course, some scenes from the Pike's Place Market. guy cleaning umbrella with fish water boxes at pike place market Finally, this is what I do for a living when I'm not photographing weddings - hanging out on these massive vessels.  I fly around the country taking pictures and writing stories about the guys that run these things.  I'm not always on the road - most of the time I work out of an office in DC - but often enough I get to go "on assignment" and photograph some ships.  It's pretty sweet. tug with vessel in seattle cruise ship in seattle waters

My favorite kind of light

feet on window sill, backlitI'm going to have the most beautiful wedding to show you tomorrow, but wanted to elaborate on a scene from yesterday.  I had my feet up on the window sill in my hotel room here in Seattle (editing said wedding) and noticed the lovely light. This is my absolute favorite kind of light to shoot in: backlighting.  Now if you're not a photographer, you probably think it's kinda silly to have a favorite light.  But I bet your photographer friends (and mine) have a favorite light, too. What I love about backlighting is that it creates this wonderful bright rim around the subject (here, my feet) that makes it stand out from the background.  This is especially effective if the subject is in front of something dark, like in the first photo below of Sarah and Scott. The other brilliant thing about backlighting is that it lights up any little bits of things floating around in the air near the subject, or other elements between the subject and the dark background.  You can see this in the photo at right, where you can see every water stain on the dirty window and in the photo below of Sarah and Scott, with the much more attractive little bits of pollen lighting up around them.  I love this effect and think it is singularly beautiful. Shooting backlit can be a little more difficult than using other types of light because most cameras will not want to expose for the subject, but for the background, particularly if you are including a lot of background in the image.  In this instance, it is critical to switch to manual mode to get the proper exposure for the subject.  Once you have the correct exposure, then you can shoot away without worrying if the camera is guessing correctly - this actually makes it much, much easier to properly engage your subjects! happy couple portrait at huntley meadows park A couple more examples.  From my shoot at Temptation Horse Farm: temptation horse farm portrait From Lisa and Scott's wedding: pedicab wedding getaway - just married From Aimee & Richard's engagement session at Dumbarton Oaks: engagement session at dumbarton oaks I hope this was useful to someone, if not, I hope you liked looking at my backlit photos!  They are normally some of my favorites from any session.
