abandoned grain elevator - duluth minnesotaGreetings from Duluth, Minnesota!  I'm here on business so can't post all the awesome photos I'm taking of and on giant boats loading coal, grain and iron ore.  It's really the best part of my 9-5 job. Every now and then though, between visits, I can stop my colleague and tell him to hang on just one second while I snap something cool on the docks.  The abandoned grain elevator (?) to your right there is one such snap.  There's a whole bunch of stuff like that out here and abandoned stuff is definitely one of my favorite photographic subjects.  Too bad I don't have time to get those shots or access when I'm not following around my colleague.  For now I'll have to be satisfied with the passing glance.  Onto the roundup!

On the Web

Each Tuesday, I post a roundup of the best stuff I saw on the internet that week.  Enjoy! Around the Solar System via The Big Picture I don't always click on Boston.com's The Big Picture - a collection of awesome photography on various subjects - but I do always click if the photos are from space.  I will never tire of looking at photos taken from outside our atmosphere.  How fascinating the universe is! Binder clip keeps beverages stacked in your fridge Genius! Ant Death Spiral via mental_floss We know that ants figure out where to go by following a scent trail left by their buddies.  In this amazing video clip, you see that played out to an unbelievable end - a "death spiral" that can last for days.  Really fascinating! Undercover Surveillance FAIL I admit it, I subscribe to failblog.  Mostly the posts are dumb but sometimes they are awesome, like this one. XKCD on physicists My husband is one, so I'm sorta obligated to include this link. Amsterdam Falafelshop to franchise! If that doesn't make sense to you, the article won't be interesting.  For us D.C. falafel fans, it's the best news since Congressional recess.

Tuesday On the Web

Welcome to my roundup of the best stuff I saw on the internet the past week.  Enjoy! The REAL stuff white people like If I weren't a photographer, I might be interested in statistical analysis.  I find data immensely fascinating, especially when it's data about people.  Honestly, I compile a number of data points about myself and revel in making charts, plotting graphs and trending various parts of my life.  This article takes data pulled from OKCupid to find out how people on the site self-describe.  It's really interesting stuff. Comparing online backup services via Wise Bread Photographers need a lot of disc space.  I've been looking into online storage solutions for a while now.  If I ever take this show on the road, it will become even more important. Top 10 personal development blogs you wish you knew about earlier A significant portion of my RSS feed reader consists of "personal development" blogs.  That phrase is like nails on a chalkboard to me - it sounds ridiculous and very corporate - but really a lot of the blogs I read have great advice.  I already subscribe to a number of blogs on this list.  If you're interested in the topic, it's a good place to start. Fabulous Freebies 2010 The format of this list is really awful but if you can stand it, you'll find some great tips for free services and things. How to give an outdoor portrait a warm cross-processed look The name says it all!  I haven't tried it yet, but I do intend to add this to my processing arsenal. I don't have a good picture from the last few days, so here's an old self-portrait.  I took this in Charleston, SC on a business trip.  Hotel room portraits are actually something of a project of mine.  When I'm in Duluth next week, I'll add to my collection. living out of a suitcase, as it were

Tuesday On the Web

Those Tuesday-after-a-holiday days, they are very sneaky.  You think you can get away with not posting and then you realize you have committed to do your "on the web" roundup.  So instead of having a new photo, here's proof that my husband thinks I'm totally awesome.  And yes, my link roundup for the week.

What should I do to my work laptop before I leave my job? I'm not quitting my day job any time soon (it's pretty great, actually) but I do need to get a new laptop in the near future, which means turning in my old one.  This is a good resource for anyone turning back in computer equipment for whatever reason. Why going to the gym is a waste of time, money and resources Loved this article about how studies show that exercise doesn't actually help you lose weight and keep it off.  Awesome, since I just joined a gym.  Of course, like anything, knowledge is power.  Don't eat your way to oblivion and you'll be fine. How to poach an egg in the microwave A game-changer, for sure.
