A Monkey and a Pig

I married into the cutest twins on earth.  George's cousins dressed up as a monkey and a pig for Halloween and though they were cranky as all get-out due to *two* birthday parties on Sunday, they still managed to pull off the animal-lookalike bit very well.  I think next year they'll be waaaay into the candy-delivery system that is Halloween. twin cousins in their halloween costumes I love these kids!! Bonus: George's mom.  Hi readership that is related to me!  Here's a photo of George and his lovely mother.  Say hello to Barbara!

My first press release!

Okay no, not for my photography business.  I'm included in the photo that will go out with a press release about the Burke & Herbert calendar I told you about.  Pretty sure I shouldn't be stealing the photo and posting it here, but you can see it and a couple of others from the quick shoot here.  Less than a week later, and as I sit here typing this, I am wearing the same exact outfit.  In the photo, I'm the third person from the left. It's true, I was trying to look hip for the photo.  I tried on a couple things but in the end, grabbed the clothes that make me feel like me.  The skirt I'm wearing used to have black in it.  Yeah, not so much anymore.  Do I look hip? Also, check my ridiculous transition glasses.  As soon as I get my lazy butt to the Costco for an eye exam, I will have a new prescription and order some more damn glasses online - two pairs - sunglasses and regular glasses!  These transitions drive me nuts by never being real sunglasses and never being regular glasses.  They're this horrible constant cloudy shade of brown. And because this is a photo blog, here are some more photos of the sky and all the awesome things it does, all the time, because it's cool like that. neat clouds and sunrise over arlington, va cool clouds over air force memorial, arlington, va

Weeds

One of the things I love about photography is its ability to turn something ugly into something beautiful.  Better said, perhaps, is that photography can isolate beauty in a subject.  I don't remember who said it or if I'm even paraphrasing correctly, but some photographer said that there is always a spectacular photo within 20 steps - you just have to find it.  I love that an image of something that might be considered ugly can become "art".  This is most obvious in photographs of "urban decay" (we photographers love this stuff) but also something as simple as weeds. And, as always, it's all about the light.  In the right light, anything is beautiful, even simple weeds growing out of the sidewalk.  I would be remiss in posting these images without referencing A Scenic World.  I might have eventually gotten around to understanding the concept of shooting the one flower that is lit up against a shadowy background, but I certainly started paying attention to scenes like this after reading her website.  A simple enough concept, but one that I feel a lot of people miss (I used to).  She seems to have stepped off the blogging bandwagon for a while now, but go back and look through her Lightroom tutorials (totally portable to Photoshop).  This lady is really good. And now, weeds: Oh and there was to be no CityZen for us - what with their lack of a la carte options and tasting menu starting at $80.  Instead, we hit up Jaleo (super-tasty Spanish tapas) and had one of those awesome romantic-out-of-nowhere, life-is-wonderful nights.  I love the bejesus out of my husband.  I really couldn't ask for a better person to spend my life with.  What the heck, here's one of him with his hair down - literally.  He always gels it up but I like when he looks natural.  Only thing better is when he takes out the contacts and puts on his glasses.  This is from the first night we spent at the hotel.
